Global Collectives
Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari coined the term “rhizome” to describe a structure which “ceaselessly establishes connections between semiotic chains, organizations of power, and circumstances relative to the arts, sciences, and social struggles.”* Multi-artist collaborations in global art collectives are perfect examples of this lateral, rhizomatic network. Collectives often encourage increased creative agency and democratic authorship without privileging one artist over the other. Collectives facilitate playful, intuitive, and responsive work between artists around the world through visual and virtual discourse.
